ROOT BALLED HEDGING PLANTING GUIDE

 

THE MOST IMPORTANT BIT !!

The hessian and wire in which the root balls are supplied is specifically designed to be left on, and will decompose over time. Removing these materials causes disturbance to the fine roots contained within the ball and makes the plant less stable in the soil.

Planting instructions:

  1. 1. Dig a planting trench twice the width of the root ball. If the sides or bottom of the trench are compacted, break them up with a fork.
  2. 2. Fork planting compost into the bottom of the trench and the back fill, for Taxus add horticultural grit to this mixture.
  3. 3. Plant at the same height they were originally growing in the nursery. For Taxus if the soil is waterlogged over winter plant slightly proud to permit airflow to the root ball.
  4. 4. Back fill with soil mix and firm well

Watering:

The importance of watering in the first year cannot be over emphasised, even in a wet Spring and Summer rain may not be enough. Even when the soil appears wet it is probably dry deeper down around the roots. If possible consider an irrigation system. Do not rely on your customers to water without very specific instructions.
